Rolling Back MIUI and HyperOS: How to Downgrade a Xiaomi Phone the Safe Way

Not every update is an improvement for every user. A new MIUI or HyperOS release can bring a bug that matters to you, worse battery life on your model, or an app compatibility problem that only appears after a week. Rolling back to the previous version is a common wish, and on Xiaomi phones the fastboot method with the Mi Flash Tool is the supported route, provided you respect the limits Xiaomi builds into its firmware.

    What a Downgrade Actually Involves

There is no undo button for a system update. A downgrade is a complete reinstall: the phone is wiped, and the older firmware is written to every partition as if the newer version had never been there. That means a full backup is not optional advice, it is the difference between an afternoon project and a genuine loss. It also means the bootloader must be unlocked, with the waiting period that involves, so a rollback is never a five-minute impulse decision.

    The Anti-Rollback Boundary

The hard limit is anti-rollback protection. Each firmware generation carries an index, and once a phone has run a generation, it refuses to install firmware with a lower index, a defence against downgrade attacks that exploit old vulnerabilities. Within the same index, rolling back one or two versions is usually possible. Across index boundaries, it is not, and attempting to force it produces exactly the kind of brick that requires professional tools. Before downloading anything, check the anti-rollback index of the installed build and of your target build; the numbers must be compatible. The version databases at miflashtool.net list this information alongside each release.

    The Downgrade Procedure

Download the target fastboot ROM for your exact codename and region, the newest version that still sits within the allowed rollback range. Extract it fully to a short folder path. Back up everything, charge the phone, boot it into fastboot mode, and connect it to the Windows PC. In the flashing program, refresh to confirm detection, select the ROM folder, and choose “clean all”, because carrying data across a downgrade invites instability. Start the flash and let it finish without touching the cable. The first boot afterwards takes longer than usual, and the system may feel sluggish for a few minutes while it rebuilds caches; judge performance after a full charge cycle, not in the first hour.

    Setting Expectations Afterwards

A rolled-back phone will immediately want to update itself again. Disable automatic updates in the settings and decline update prompts until you are sure the newer release has fixed whatever pushed you back. Keep your backup until the phone has run the older build for several days. Downgrading done patiently is a controlled, reversible experiment, and a useful reminder that on your own hardware, the final say on software version can still be yours.

    Planning the Rollback Window

Because unlocking carries a waiting period, a rollback works best when it is planned rather than improvised in frustration. Start the unlock process while the phone still runs the new version, keep using it normally during the wait, and use those days productively: complete the backup, download and verify the target firmware, and read the release notes of both versions one more time. By the day the unlock completes, every other ingredient is already on the desk, and the actual downgrade occupies a single sitting. Owners who plan this way also report a useful side effect: a week of living with the new version sometimes reveals that the hated change was a setting, not a bug, and the rollback turns out to be unnecessary after all.
